Hulk vs. Thor, or as I prefer to call it, Thor vs. Hulk

Thor vs. Hulk is the latest animated offering from Marvel Comics (coupled with the simultaneous release Hulk vs. Wolverine). Unlike the previous “Ultimate Avengers” DVDs, Thor vs. Hulk focuses on the old-school Thor: red cape, winged helmet, and Mjolnir, his mystical uru hammer.
Full disclosure: I’m a Thor fan-boy. I wear a Mjolnir pendant on a necklace and my office is decorated with Marvel Legends Thor action figures. So while I’ve been looking forward to this movie since it was announced in mid-2008, my expectations were tempered by my typical pessimism that it could turn out to be a disappointment.
My pessimism was unfounded. Marvel has really come through in creating an epic Asgardian tale, wearing the influence of Walt Simonson proudly. Simonson is the writer of Thor’s most significant storyline in the 80′s, and many of the characters he defined make welcome cameos: Skurge, Malekith the Accursed, Surtur, and Balder, among others. The story opens in Asgard, in the midst of the Odin-sleep, when Asgard’s enemies launch their attacks while the kingdom is at its most vulnerable. Enter Loki, who is not content to merely repeat the same old cycle of events: he has kidnapped Bruce Banner and with the aid of Amora the Enchantress, plans to usurp the power of the Hulk to finally rule Asgard.
The production of the video is top-notch, from the artwork to the voice talent to the direction of the battles. One would expect the battles between the Hulk and the God of Thunder to be epic, but even I was impressed by the sheer power and brutality of the blows given and received as the two rage through the streets of Asgard. You’re a Thor Fanboy and you enjoyed seeing Thor getting the crap beat out of him??? Ya Right!!
Dude, Thor fought the same Hulk in Hulk #300 to a draw. This movie was garbage, and only Hulk fanboys will enjoy. Hulk taking down Thor and all of Asgard is as stupid as Wolerine holding his own against the Hulk.

I feel (and felt) your pain. Would I have loved to see Thor come in, slap the Hulk around a bit, then go reduce Loki’s head to a pile of dust? Sure I would. But that wouldn’t have made for a good movie (nor a very long one).
My rationale: Thor goes into this battle thinking of the Hulk/Banner as an ally, so he’s treating him with kid gloves (well, as much as he can).
But it’s not the true Hulk. It’s the personification of strength and rage. Couple these factors (Thor’s hesitancy and the lack of Banner’s moderating “influence”) and I can accept Thor getting beat.
That said, put him up against the “real” Hulk and Thor wins, hands down. And as long as Thor has the Odin-power (which he didn’t in the Hulk vs. movie), it’s not even a contest.

It was never about Thor slapping around Hulk for me, but showing them as peers like continuity has done so often. They could have had Thor fight Hulk more evenly and still come up with a decent story. A more convincing lose with both sides looking good would of made it more plausible and enjoyable. Also go read and listen to some of Chris and Kyle’s interviews and it becomes apparent that they’re bias Hulk Fanboys. Well here’s hoping the movies better because i’ve lost a lot of faith in Marvel.

Someone had the courtesy to point out to me that another explanation for Thor’s “defeat” exists: recall that the Norse gods were depleted/weakened as a result of the Frost giant battles that had just occurred. So there’s that.

This movie was one-sided, untrue to comics, and typically enjoyable only to Hulk fans. There doesn’t need to be excuses of why he lost, whether “energy depletion from fighting Frost Giants” or “he took Hulk too lightly”, the writers just had Hulk win plain and simple. It was a decent film, but Hulk is portrayed as this “unstoppable” monster and Thor comes across almost weak. Anyways, I think Thor would take Hulk any time, Hulk Vs. is just the product of bias writers.

Thor became an integral member of Marvels Avengers. I hope there will be Justice League from DC Universe popping through Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America group with many cool villians.
